Kidney Cancer Advocacy Days
Spring 2023

KidneyCAN participates in Advocacy Days in Washington D.C. every year, joining other advocates from around the country to make the voices of the kidney cancer community heard on Capitol Hill. These events offer a unique opportunity to meet with members of Congress and their staff to discuss issues that are important to our community and advocate for increased funding for kidney cancer research.

Our goals in participating in Advocacy Days events are simple but critical: we want to advocate for increased funding for kidney cancer research and ensure that the patient voice is heard in matters of healthcare legislation.

This year, we are asking Congress to support a $60 million appropriation for the Kidney Cancer Research Program (KCRP), $50.9 billion for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) including a $9.988 billion appropriation for the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and long-term telehealth legislation.

We believe that by increasing funding for research, we can accelerate the development of new treatments and ultimately find a cure for kidney cancer. Additionally, by ensuring that the patient voice is heard in matters of healthcare legislation, we can work to promote clinical trial development and diversity in enrollment, which will bring us closer to our goal of accelerating cures.

OUR 2024 ASKS

$60 million appropriation for KCRP for Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24).

$50.9 billion for the NIH including $9.988 billion appropriation for the NCI.

Long-term telehealth legislation.

Robust, sustainable funding for medical research and incorporate the patient voice on legislative policy matters, particularly those promoting clinical trial development, diversity in enrollment, and accelerating cures.

CONGRESSIONAL MEETINGS

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

All patients, families, caregivers, friends, and medical professionals welcome. Most advocates will meet virtually with their representatives and Congressional staff in their home districts to ask for research funding.

We provide training with Advocacy 101, a detailed guide to help you know what to expect and how to talk to your representatives about kidney cancer research funding. You will receive a meeting schedule, talking points, scripts you can use if you would like, and leave-behind documents.

If you have any questions, please reach out! We welcome anyone with a passion for accelerating cures for kidney cancer. Contact our Legislative Patient Advocate, Debra Beyhan, at debra.beyhan@kidneycan.org.

This money isn’t a given. We’ve had to fight for it, year after year. In this video, Dr. Andrew Smith, a kidney cancer researcher from the University of Alabama, explains the impact of this funding on his work and the state of Alabama.

When you meet with Congress, you’ll help them understand the impact of kidney cancer on people’s lives and the urgent need for a cure. Join us and make your voice heard!

We know that awareness of kidney cancer and its impact on many lives leads to a sense of urgency, a desire for solutions. Awareness leads to advocacy, and advocacy — joining to speak as one voice — leads to funding and research. That’s how we get to cures.

💚June 15th is #WorldKidneyCancerDay. This year, we're talking about how to live well when you have kidney cancer.

A #kidneycancer diagnosis can impact your emotional health, which in turn can affect your relationships. This is a life-changing experience, and you may need to adjust household and extended family roles. At our Patient Resource Center, we’ve gathered resources to guide you as you share your diagnosis, communicate with others, and seek support.

🇺🇸 Honoring Heroes on Memorial Day 🇺🇸

Today, on #MemorialDay, we remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. We pay tribute to their courage, dedication, and selflessness in defending our freedoms.

As we commemorate this day, it is essential to recognize that many service-related deaths result from diseases, specifically #kidneycancer, linked to exposures during military service. We stand with our veterans and their families, offering support and resources to navigate their healthcare journeys.

Visit our Kidney Cancer and the Military page in the Patient Resource Center, where we share powerful stories from veterans affected by cancer due to exposure while serving. These stories highlight the significance of the recently passed PACT Act, which provides recognition, validation, and medical aid for service-related chemical injuries.

https://bit.ly/MiltaryandKidneyCancer

Today, let us honor our fallen heroes and also support our living heroes by ensuring they receive the care and benefits they deserve. Together, we can continue to advocate for improved healthcare access and research advancements, while standing in solidarity with our military community.
