Kidney cancer treatment presents unique challenges to your kidney function. From surgeries like nephrectomy to the side effects of treatments like TKIs and immunotherapies, there’s a lot to manage. Add concerns about imaging contrasts and conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure, and it’s clear why adding experts to your care team is important.

Yet many patients miss out on expert advice from onco-nephrologists. This Town Hall helps you understand where expert advice from a nephrologist may improve your kidney health.

Our experts are here to guide you, address your concerns, and answer your questions. Stay informed, ask the right questions, build the right team, and maintain healthy kidneys throughout your treatment!

HANS HAMMERS, M.D., Ph.D.

Oncologist,
UT Southwestern Medical Center

Hans Hammers, M.D., Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and a member of its Division of Hematology and Oncology. He is the inaugural Eugene P. Frenkel, M.D. Scholar in Clinical Medicine.

Originally from Germany, Dr. Hammers received his medical and doctoral degrees from the Medical University of Luebeck. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, and then received advanced training through a fellowship program in medical oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University.

Also at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Hammers led the kidney cancer research efforts and played a major role in the development of immunotherapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors in kidney cancer. His work in immunotherapy has been nationally recognized, and he has been the principal investigator on several industry- and investigator-sponsored trials.

Board certified in internal medicine and in medical oncology, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2016.

He is co-leader of clinical research and immunotherapy for the kidney cancer research program and will be continuing his research efforts to develop novel immunotherapies for kidney cancer.

This passion steered him towards an onco-nephrology specialty sub-fellowship at the globally recognized Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, which he completed in 2020.

In addition to his clinical commitments, Dr. Abramson is an esteemed member of the American Society of Nephrology, reflecting his dedication to advancing the field and staying abreast of the latest developments.

An informed patient is an empowered patient.

We know that awareness of kidney cancer and its impact on many lives leads to a sense of urgency, a desire for solutions. Awareness leads to advocacy, and advocacy — joining to speak as one voice — leads to funding and research. That’s how we get to cures.

Standing tall in front of the Capitol Building, Kathleen champions the fight against #kidneycancer, inspired by the memory of her husband, Ken Moore, who passed in July 2021.

With the unwavering support of her children, Allison and Eric, Kathleen joins KidneyCAN today in urging Congress for:

✅ A $60 million appropriation for the #KCRP for FY24.
✅ $50.9 billion for the NIH, including a $9.988 billion appropriation for the NCI.
✅ Long-term #telehealth legislation.
✅ Sustainable funding for medical #research and ensuring the #patientvoice is central in legislative policy, especially in promoting diverse #clinicaltrial enrollment.

Together, we believe in a future with early detection, less toxic treatments, and ultimately, cures for kidney cancer.
