Meet the Experts
Join Dr. Hans Hammers, a renowned kidney cancer specialist from UT Southwestern, and Dr. Matthew Abramson, an onco-nephrologist from Mt. Sinai, as they show patients the value of team management in maintaining healthy kidneys through the RCC treatment process.

HANS HAMMERS, M.D., Ph.D.
Oncologist,
UT Southwestern Medical Center
Hans Hammers, M.D., Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center, and a member of its Division of Hematology and Oncology. He is the inaugural Eugene P. Frenkel, M.D. Scholar in Clinical Medicine.
Originally from Germany, Dr. Hammers received his medical and doctoral degrees from the Medical University of Luebeck. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, and then received advanced training through a fellowship program in medical oncology at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins University.
Also at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Hammers led the kidney cancer research efforts and played a major role in the development of immunotherapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors in kidney cancer. His work in immunotherapy has been nationally recognized, and he has been the principal investigator on several industry- and investigator-sponsored trials.
Board certified in internal medicine and in medical oncology, he joined the UT Southwestern faculty in 2016.
He is co-leader of clinical research and immunotherapy for the kidney cancer research program and will be continuing his research efforts to develop novel immunotherapies for kidney cancer.

A native of New York City, Dr. Abramson embarked on his medical journey with an internal medicine residency at Stony Brook Medicine, which he completed in 2017. His dedication to the field of nephrology led him to a general nephrology fellowship at the renowned Weill Cornell Medicine, culminating in 2019. During this period, he cultivated a profound interest in onco-nephrology, a specialty that bridges oncology and nephrology. This passion steered him towards an onco-nephrology specialty sub-fellowship at the globally recognized Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, which he completed in 2020.
In addition to his clinical commitments, Dr. Abramson is an esteemed member of the American Society of Nephrology, reflecting his dedication to advancing the field and staying abreast of the latest developments.
An informed patient is an empowered patient.
We at KidneyCAN know how challenging it can be to keep up with research developments and how they could impact your treatment options. We hope the ideas presented in our Town Hall help you as you work with your doctor to manage your care for kidney cancer.
