Meet the Experts

The hosts of the popular Uromigos podcast, Drs. Brian Rini and Tom Powles, presented an overview of kidney cancer research from 2023 and a look ahead to what we can expect from clinical trials in 2024.
Tom Powles | Presenter at KidneyCAN Town Hall

TOM POWLES, M.B.B.S., M.R.C.P., M.D.

Director,
Barts Cancer Centre

Dr. Thomas Powles, Director of Barts Cancer Centre, is a luminary in the field of oncology, particularly in the realms of kidney and bladder cancer.

His journey in medicine began with his training as an oncologist at Imperial College, leading him to become one of the most prominent figures in genitourinary oncology. At Barts, one of the largest cancer centers in the UK, Dr. Powles has been instrumental in advancing research and treatment. His expertise encompasses a wide range of clinical studies, from phase I to phase III, with a particular focus on translational phase II studies exploring novel targeted and immune therapies. In addition to his clinical and research work, Dr. Powles has an impressive publication record with over 300 research papers. He has significantly contributed to setting the European treatment guidelines for bladder and kidney cancer and continues to lead research that has resulted in the approval of several cancer therapies. His commitment to early detection and treatment of bladder and kidney cancer has been a cornerstone of his career.

In 2023, his contributions were recognized globally when he was named in Nature’s 10 as one of the most influential scientists.

Outside of his research and clinical work, Dr. Powles co-hosts the Uromigos podcast, an informative platform where he discusses the latest developments in genitourinary cancers, bringing his expertise to a wider audience. This combination of clinical excellence, research innovation, and public education cements his status as a leader in the field of oncology.

Brian Rini | Presenter at KidneyCAN Town Hall

BRIAN RINI, M.D., F.A.S.C.O.

Chief of Clinical Trials,
Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center

Dr. Brian I. Rini  serves as the Chief of Clinical Trials at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (VICC) and holds the esteemed position of Ingram Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University. His remarkable career is distinguished by his leadership in kidney cancer clinical research and the significant expansion of cancer clinical research operations at VICC.

Dr. Rini’s research activities are expansive, encompassing over 300 publications primarily focusing on genitourinary cancer, especially renal cell carcinoma. His role as the lead investigator in several phase 3 clinical trials has been instrumental in obtaining FDA approval for numerous cancer therapies.

In addition to his research and clinical work, Dr. Rini is a prominent figure in the oncology community. He has delivered numerous seminars and invited lectureships, both locally and internationally, sharing his vast knowledge and expertise on genitourinary cancers and their treatments. He also recently completed his term as a member and immediate past Chair of the Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee (ODAC).

Furthermore, Dr. Rini extends his expertise to a wider audience as a co-host of the Uromigos Podcast, which broadcasts the latest developments in genitourinary cancer. Alongside Dr. Tom Powles, he engages in discussions on cutting-edge research and therapies, making significant contributions to public education in oncology.

The Uromigos Story

The Uromigos formed in early 2017 as a group of friends attempting to provide balanced, scientific content about GU malignancies on Twitter. It was hoped that this diverse group would represent various positions on a given topic, which has not always been the case on social media. This attempt was “moderately successful,” as Tom would say. Different viewpoints were represented, but they weren’t that good at Twitter.

In early 2020, Tom and Brian decide to try their hand at podcasting. With more enthusiasm than expertise, the Uromigos podcasts were launched. The first few were confusing at best, including the “poster walk” and the “banging door” episode.

Over 200 podcasts and nearly 200,000 cumulative listens later, they hope the podcasts have become a significant resource for balanced scientific content related to the care of patients with GU malignancies. Built around the conversational style of podcasts, the first Uromigos Live meeting was held in Nashville in late 2022. The foundational principles of both the live meeting and podcasts are to challenge conventional thinking, to encourage diverse and unbiased viewpoints and to promote early career researchers.

An informed patient is an empowered patient.

We at KidneyCAN know how challenging it can be to keep up with research developments and how they could impact your treatment options. We hope the ideas presented in our Town Hall help you as you work with your doctor to manage your care for kidney cancer.

If you’re looking to connect with more people who share your challenges and can offer support, check out our Smart Patients forum.
