Always an Option: Clinical Trials

A KidneyCAN Town Hall Event

Join us to learn the basics of the clinical trial process and why trial participation can make sense anywhere along your treatment journey.

A KidneyCAN Town Hall

Tuesday, July 19th

6:00-7:00 pm ET

(followed by optional patient social)

Webinar via Zoom

Many patients are surprised to be offered a trial as an option for their first treatment. At large cancer centers, you may be offered a trial for any needed treatment change. Your oncologist may even suggest travel so you can access a new therapy years before it is FDA-approved.

Join us to learn the basics of the clinical trial process and why trial participation can make sense anywhere along your treatment journey. Consents, endpoints, patient rights, and how trial participation affects your clinical care are all part of this discussion with two leading clinical investigators.

Brian Rini, M.D.

Vanderbilt University Medical Center

Elizabeth Plimack, M.D.

Fox Chase Cancer Center

An informed patient is an empowered patient.

We at KidneyCAN know how challenging it can be to keep up with research developments and how they could impact your treatment options. We hope the ideas presented in our Town Hall help you as you work with your doctor to manage your care for kidney cancer.

If you’re looking to connect with more people who share your challenges and can offer support, check out our Smart Patients forum.

We know that awareness of kidney cancer and its impact on many lives leads to a sense of urgency, a desire for solutions. Awareness leads to advocacy, and advocacy — joining to speak as one voice — leads to funding and research. That’s how we get to cures.

Depending on your #kidneycancer type, its stage, and your quality of life priorities, a range of treatment options may be available to you. Studies show the best outcomes are when patients and doctors make treatment decisions together. But currently, not enough conversations are happening.
That's why the theme for this year's #WorldKidneyCancerDay is "We need to talk about treatment options."

Studies show patients and their doctors don't talk nearly enough about treatment options -- including access to clinical trials -- and that better conversations and shared decision-making lead to better treatment options with fewer side effects.
On #WorldKidneyCancerDay, we want to share resources to help you learn about clinical trials and treatment options for #kidneycancer.

Studies show kidney cancer patients and their doctors aren't currently having the conversations they should be about kidney cancer treatment options, including access to clinical trials. And treatment outcomes are sometimes compromised as a result.
Sometimes its because patients don't feel they can question their doctors. Other times its because doctors don't want to overwhelm their patients, or their appointments are too short.
That's why the theme for World Kidney Cancer Day 2022 is "We need to talk about treatment options." The International Kidney Cancer Coalition (IKCC) has created a downloadable PDF of the six questions every kidney cancer patient should feel able to ask their cancer care team.

Today, on #WorldKidneyCancerDay, we are discussing the challenges and opportunities involved in having better conversations about #kidneycancer treatment options. How can we do better?
A key issue here in the United States is equitable access to clinical trials and serving underrepresented populations. Helping patients understand clinical trials -- how to ask about them and where to find them -- is a big step forward.
